Oil major Eni SpA said it opened its biodiesel plant in Gela, Sicily on the site of a former crude oil refinery. The plant will run on hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) and other feedstock.
Launched in August 2019, it has a processing capacity of up to 750,000 tonnes a year and will be able to treat used cooking oil, animal fat, algae and by-products as well as plant oils .
All the petrochemical plants built in Gela since 1962 have closed down. In addition to the EUR294 mln that has been spent so far on reconverting the refineries, Eni plans to invest another EUR73 mln for further preliminary activities and pre-treating biomass, which will be finished by Q3 2020 and will supply the plant with second-generation raw material, from waste, raw vegetable oil and advanced material.
The process of converting the traditional refinery into one for HVO production began in April 2016.
The company sells its HVO product in a 15% diesel blend.
It already runs a HVO plant in Venice, which can produce up to 360,000 tonnes per year, and will be expanded to 560,000, according to earlier company announcements.
The addition makes Eni the second-largest HVO producer worldwide, after Neste (> 2 mln tonnes).
