The South Pole has warmed three times faster than the rest of the planet in the last 30 years due to warmer tropical ocean temperatures, new research shows Monday.
The resulting accelerated ice melting, in turn, brought in plain sight the bearing at the Earth's axis southern end, a
joint Britain-New Zealand expedition found.

U.S. Geological Service is urging the U.S. Navy to send a submarine craft at the North Pole, in order to verify whether a corrisponding chasm has formed there; if this were the case, it would be worrying because that could mean that the axis is moving from its usual location. Indeed, should the pin completely come out of its seat, the planet would become unbalanced, the USGS president warned.

Questions arise now about the Eath's internal heat source: may it be that heat comes from the friction between the planet and its pivot?
More research is needed, the study's lead scientist concluded.
